Perceptually Consistent Color-to-Gray Image Conversion

چکیده
In this paper, we propose a color to grayscale image conversion algorithm (C2G) that aims to preserve the perceptual properties of the color image as much as possible. To this end, we propose measures for two perceptual properties based on contemporary research in vision science: brightness and multi-scale contrast. The brightness measurement is based on the idea that the brightness of a grayscale image will affect the perception of the probability of color information. The color contrast measurement is based on the idea that the contrast of a given pixel to its surroundings can be measured as a linear combination of color contrast at different scales. Based on these measures we propose a graph based optimization framework to balance the brightness and contrast measurements. To solve the optimization, an `1-norm based method is provided which converts color discontinuities to brightness discontinuities. To validate our methods, we evaluate against the existing Ĉad́ık and Color250 datasets, and against NeoColor, a new dataset that improves over existing C2G datasets. NeoColor contains around 300 images from typical C2G scenarios, including: commercial photograph, printing, books, magazines, masterpiece artworks and computer designed graphics. We show improvements in metrics of performance, and further through a user study, we validate the performance of both the algorithm and the metric.

A New Method for Color Gamut Mapping by Genetic Algorithm
To reproduce an image, it is necessary to map out of gamut colors of the image to destination gamut. It is clear that the best color gamut mapping introduces the perceptually closest image to the original one. In this study, a new color gamut mapping is purposed by the aid of Genetic Algorithm (GA). The color difference between the original and mapped images based on S-LAB formula was chosen as...
متن کاملInverse color to black-and-white halftone conversion via dictionary learning and color mapping
This paper challenges the problem of estimating the original red–green–blue (RGB) image from a black-and-white (B&W) halftone image with homogeneously distributed dot patterns. To achieve this goal, training RGB images are converted into color-embedded gray images using the conventional reversible color to gray conversion method, and then converted into halftone images using error diffusion in ...
متن کامل–high-fidelity Imaging– the Computational Models of the Human Visual System in High Dynamic Range Video Compression, Visible Difference Prediction and Image Processing Dissertation
As new displays and cameras offer enhanced color capabilities, there is a need to extend the precision of digital content. High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging encodes images and video with higher than normal bit-depth precision, enabling representation of the complete color gamut and the full visible range of luminance. This thesis addresses three problems of HDR imaging: the measurement of visibl...
متن کاملTraditional Color Image Enhancement Based on Adaptive Filter
Color image enhancement is a very important pre-processing stage in face detection and face recognition applications especially when the environment is very dark. In this paper, a color color image enhancement with the adaptive filter and discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is proposed. Discrete wavelet transform is used to improve image enhancement and stationary wavelet transform is used to redu...
متن کاملA Novel Color Image Compression Method Using Eigenimages
Since the birth of multi–spectral imaging techniques, there has been a tendency to consider and process this new type of data as a set of parallel gray–scale images, instead of an ensemble of an n–D realization. Although, even now, some researchers make the same assumption, it is proved that using vector geometries leads to better results. In this paper, first a method is prop...
